Each November, we wear poppies to honour the fallen. The red for soldiers, the white for peace, and the purple to remember the animals who served alongside humans during war.

As we approach Remembrance Day, it’s important to pause not only for the human heroes, but also for the four-legged, winged, and hooved companions who played their part and paid the ultimate price. Even when they had no choice.

In this blog, we’re exploring the story behind the purple poppy, what it symbolises, and how we can continue to honour animals in service today.

🌸 What Does the Purple Poppy Represent?

The purple poppy was created in 2016 to commemorate animals who served and died during conflicts. While red poppies represent human soldiers, the purple reminds us of the countless horses, dogs, pigeons, camels, and even elephants who supported troops and endured the same dangers.

From carrying supplies and pulling equipment to detecting mines and delivering vital messages, these animals worked courageously... often without protection or recognition.

🐴 A Brief History of Animals in War

During World War I, over 8 million horses and donkeys were sent to the front lines, with many never returning home. Dogs acted as messengers, sentries, and rescuers, while pigeons carried life-saving information across battlefields when radio communication failed.

One of the most famous animal heroes was Cher Ami, a pigeon who saved nearly 200 soldiers by delivering a message despite being gravely wounded. Then there was Gander, a Newfoundland dog who sacrificed his life to protect Canadian soldiers in WWII.

Their stories are a powerful reminder that courage and sacrifice aren’t limited to humans.

🕊️ Why the Purple Poppy Matters Today

The purple poppy isn’t about dividing remembrance — it’s about adding to it. It reminds us that animals continue to serve in dangerous and selfless roles even now.

From military and police dogs to search and rescue teams, animals still put their lives on the line to protect and help humans.

For pet owners and professionals, it’s also a time to reflect on the incredible bond we share with animals. One built on trust, loyalty, and compassion.

💜 How You Can Honour Animals This Remembrance Day

If you’d like to show your support this Remembrance Day, here are a few ways to get involved:

  • Wear a purple poppy alongside your red one. Buy one here

  • Donate to animal charities that support working and retired service animals.

  • Share stories of animal heroes on social media to raise awareness.

  • Teach children or students about the role animals played in wartime.

  • Take a quiet moment with your own pets to appreciate the companionship we so often take for granted.

Every small act keeps their memory alive.

🐾 Remembering with Respect

As someone who works closely with animals every day, I believe Remembrance Day is also a chance to honour the silent service of the animals who continue to work alongside us. Whether that’s a police dog, a therapy cat, or a loyal family pet.

So this year, when you see a purple poppy, take a moment to remember the unspoken bravery behind it.

Because remembrance is for all who served — and that includes the paws, hooves, wings, and whiskers who stood beside us.
