Summer sunshine means more park trips, beach walks, and garden playtime, but it also means heat risks for our dogs who join us. At Bluebell Pet Care, we know that pet heat safety is top of mind for owners and pet businesses. One popular solution is cooling clothing for dogs—like cooling vests, cooling bandanas, and even cooling harnesses. But do they work, and are they right for your pet? Let’s dig in.

🧊 What Is Cooling Clothing for Pets?

Cooling pet apparel is designed to help regulate your dog’s body temperature during hot weather. Most cooling vests and bandanas use evaporative cooling—you soak them in water, wring them out, and they slowly release cool moisture, lowering the temperature around your dog’s body. Some designs use gel inserts or cooling packs that can be chilled in the fridge.

The Benefits of Cooling Vests & Bandanas

1. Reduce Risk of Heat Stress

Cooling vests and bandanas can help prevent overheating in dogs, especially breeds prone to heatstroke such as pugs, bulldogs, and huskies.

2. Great for Active Summer Adventures

If you enjoy hiking, running, or long walks, a dog cooling vest can keep your pup comfortable for longer, letting you both enjoy the outdoors safely. However, you should not use this as an ''excuse''' to still take them out in dangerous temperatures.

3. Easy to Use & Reusable

Most cooling gear only requires water—no complicated setup. Simply soak, wring, and go.

4. Portable & Lightweight

Cooling bandanas, in particular, are small enough to toss in your bag for pet-friendly summer travel.

5. Fashion Meets Function

Let’s face it—your dog will look adorable while staying safe. Many cooling harness and bandana designs come in bright colors for visibility and extra safety.

⚠️ The Drawbacks & Things to Consider

1. Not a Substitute for Shade & Water

Cooling gear should be part of a complete pet summer safety plan. Including access to fresh water, shade, and rest. These clothes are for prevention and should not be used if a dog is already suffering from heatstroke (See our advice about heatstroke here)

2. Limited Duration

Evaporative cooling clothing may only stay cool for 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on temperature and humidity. These cooling clothes need to be checked and resoaked frequently to be effective.

3. Fit Matters

A poorly fitted vest can cause discomfort or even chafing. Always measure your dog before buying.

4. Maintenance Required

You’ll need to re-soak vests and bandanas regularly to keep them effective—and wash them often to prevent odour buildup.

5. Some Dogs Don’t Like Wearing Clothes

Sensitive pets might resist wearing any apparel, cooling or otherwise. Start with short sessions to help them adjust. Do not force a dog to wear clothing if they become distressed.

🐾 Tips for Choosing the Best Cooling Gear for Your Pet

  • Choose breathable materials to allow for proper airflow.

  • Look for adjustable straps for a secure, comfortable fit.

  • Consider activity type—a cooling harness/vest for hiking vs. a simple cooling bandana for inside or in your garden.

  • Check product reviews for durability and real-world performance.

🌞 My thoughts?

Cooling vests, cooling bandanas, and other pet cooling clothing can be a fantastic addition to your dog’s summer safety kit. They work best when combined with other precautions like avoiding midday heat, keeping water handy, and knowing the signs of heat stress in dogs. But many people miss use them and think they make their dog immune to the summer heat. Don't fall into this trap!

I started Bluebell Pet Care to keep pets safe. I believe in keeping pets safe, happy, and comfortable—whatever the weather. If you’re considering summer dog gear, explore our guides, check our recommendations, and help your pet stay cool all season long.
